Clusiaceae) family. Mangosteen peel extract as herbal product have been widely marketed in Indonesia. Numerous researches on mangosteen has been studied in vitro and in vivo. It indicated that its high interest and the usefulness of mangosteen in research. The review was done by collecting and analyzing minimum 50 research articles from PubMed to seek the phytochemical contents and pharmacological activity of mangosteen. Mangosteen has been reported as a rich source of xanthones that greatly contributed to its pharmacological activity. Various xanthone derivatives have been isolated from the mangosteen each year. Alfa-mangostin is one of the xanthone derivatives which has been extensively studied for its pharmachological activities. Apart from xanthone, mangosteen also contains benzophenones, flavonoids, condensed tannin, steroid and cardiac glycoside. Mangosteen is also rich in nutrients such as carbohydrates, protein, calcium, magnesium, potassium, and vitamins A and C. Mangosteen has a wide range of pharmacological effects including antioxidants, anti-acne, antibacterial, anti Alzheimer, antipsychotic, antidiabetic, anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, antiobesity, anticancer, antimalarial, anti Dengue and antiparasitic. This literature review indicated that xanthone in mangosteen had potential to be promising drug candidate. Exploration especially in pre-clinical, clinical trials of xanthone and xanthone targeting effects that could be carried out in future research. text
