Description
Summary:Abstract:
Soft extract of Phaseolus vulgaris Linn. fruits was for antihyperglycaemic activity in alloxan induced diabetic male albino rats as well as the response of the extract on glucose induced hyperglycaemia. Chiorpropamide was employed as the oral antidiabetic standard for comparison.
In alloxan diabetic rats, oral administrations of the extract in doses of 1 g/kg and 1,5 g/kg body weight for seven days caused significant reduction in blood sugar levels. The glucose level started decreasing from the third day and continued up to seventh day after drugs ad-ministration. However, the effect of the extract was less pronounced as compared to chlorpropamide ( 22,5 mg/kg body weight )
. Phaseolus vulgaris Linn. fruit extract when perorally to glucose induced hyperglycaemic rats, using the same doses as in alloxan diabetic, was found equally effective in reducing blood glucose levels as compared to the control groups. A maximum rise of blood glucose levels was obtained in the first hour after oral applications and subsequently a fall below the initial level at the thrird hour.
These finding suggest that Phaseolus vulgaris Linn. fruits might be having antidiabetic property.
