Summary: | Kota Lama Semarang (lit. Old Town of Semarang) is known as Little Netherland or
European Quarter due to its high concentration of colonial-styled heritage buildings. This
unique building style concentration is a capital for further development into heritage tourism.
The 2019 physical revitalization done by the Ministry of Public Works was aimed to support
the development of Kota Lama Semarang as a tourism area. However, the physical
revitalization attracted criticism about the concept of the revitalization that overlooked the most
significant asset of Kota Lama—the architectural visual image of the heritage buildings
themselves. This design is intended to create a public space design based on the architectural
visual image of the heritage buildings in the most historically significant area in Kota Lama
Semarang, the corridor of Letjen Suprapto Street.
On this design thesis, the method used as a pre-design analysis is visual impact
assessment. In a visual impact assessment, a series of viewpoints are identified along the
corridor that present architectural visual image of the corridor’s heritage buildings. The
resulting visual impact assessment is then used to form a design concept. The design is
visualized in an urban design product concerning such urban design elements as accessibility,
open spaces, compatibility, and identity. The scope of area in this design thesis encompasses
the district of Kota Lama Semarang with emphasis on the corridor of Letjen Suprapto st. The
scope of design objects in this design thesis are the urban public space objects—streets,
pedestrian ways, and open spaces. In this design process, it is found that visual impact
assessment one of potential intruments to be used for design process in a public space of a
heritage area in order to better accomodate the architectural visual image of the heritage
buildings within. However, the visual impact assessment mostly affects the placement of public
realm objects. How the objects’ designs and variety are choosen requires more in-depth study
according to urban design principles |
