ASSESSMENT OF ZINC POLLUTION IN SURFACE SEDIMENT AND WATER OF UMEDA RIVER
Heavy metal contamination in the urban river has become the most severe problem in urban environment, especially zinc (Zn) compound is harm full to the environment at current levels of exposure. This study aims to assess the impact on urbanization and industrialization to Zn pollution in surface sed...

This study aims to assess the impact on urbanization and industrialization to Zn pollution in surface sediment and water at the Umeda River. Triplicate surface sediment and river water samples were collected at 9 (surface sediment and river water), and 3 (waste water) sampling points.Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer (AAS) was used for analyzing the Zn and Fe concentrations. The surface sediments in the Umeda River contained 48 to 159 mg/kg of Zn. The results indicated that Zn concentrations were abundant in the ascending order of 600-1000?m, 300-600 ?m, and <300 ?m. The higher the grain size, thehigher the POC in which might contribute to the the higher Zn and Fe concentration. In addition, the sediment quality guidelines indicated that the Zn levels in the study area did not constitute a major threat to biota. Meanwhile, the Zn concentrations in river water, ranged from 0.005 to 0.028 mg/L, were within the environmental quality standard. Normalization with Fe showed that the Zn pollution in surface sediment had been influenced by anthropogenic activities such as industrialization and urbanization. text |
