Summary: | The special properties of austenitic manganese steel are toughness and hardness, making it an excellent material for use in impact and abrasion loads. However, to have these mechanical properties, it is necessary to use several methods such as the addition of alloying elements, heat treatment, and mechanical treatment. In this study, heat treatment and mechanical treatment were carried out to identify the mechanical properties of ASTM A-128 Grade C austenitic manganese steel. Heat treatment was carried out in two stages of heating. The first stage at a temperature of 625°C for 3.5 hours resulted in the transformation of carbide at the grain boundaries into a pearlite phase and the second stage heating at a temperature of 1000°C for 1.5 hours then rapidly cooled using water to produce dispersed hardened austenite which was formed. of pearlite transformation. Meanwhile, for mechanical treatment, cold rolling was carried out until the material was deformed to 53.6%. The plastic deformation process affects the hardness value which increases up to 132% on the surface and 82% on the inside of the sample due to the formation of martensite when this austenitic manganese steel is plastically deformed. The formation of this martensite was confirmed by X-ray diffraction testing and by making it magnetic after the plastic deformation process. Cold rolling on this austenitic manganese steel also makes the grain shape flat and there are visible lines on the austenitic matrix which is thought to be a martensitic structure formed on this austenitic manganese steel. |
