DEVELOPMENT OF TEXTILE-BASED FLEXIBLE ELECTRODE FOR ELECTRIC BIOPOTENTIAL MEASUREMENT APPLICATION USING EMG

Electromyography (EMG) is a technique to measure electric signals from muscle activity. The common electrodes type used are dry electrodes and wet electrodes. These types of electrodes have some shortcomings, such as weak contact between electrodes and skin, the difficulty to measure EMG on body cur...

INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/57072 Electromyography (EMG) is a technique to measure electric signals from muscle activity. The common electrodes type used are dry electrodes and wet electrodes. These types of electrodes have some shortcomings, such as weak contact between electrodes and skin, the difficulty to measure EMG on body curves, and they cause discomfort during measurement. It was due to stiffness of the dry electrodes, and the use of gel on wet electrodes which can only provide good sensitivity for a short time and have the potential to cause skin irritation. In this research, a textile-based flexible electrode was fabricated for measuring EMG signals. The flexible electrodes were fabricated from cotton that had been coated by polyaniline and MWCNT. Polyaniline was selected as conductive material due to its high electrical conductivity, stability, and flexibility. Fabrication was done using COP method of aniline monomer which was mixed with ammonium persulfate as initiator in acidic media. Performance of flexible electrodes was compared with gel Ag/AgCl electrodes currently available in the market. Flexible electrodes fabricated in this study were characterized to have an electrical conductivity of 75,192 S/m and signal EMG to noise ratio of 28,855 dB. text
