Description
Summary:Abstract:

Representation of the tomographic images by the response of the earth physical properties such as wavespeed and wave attenuation can be used to reveal subsurface structure. Previous tomographic studies using delay-time tomography method have successfully delineated the internal structure of Mt. Guntur. This study aimed to give more information to improve our understanding of the Mt. Guntur internal structure. The main objective of this study is to construct tomographic images of seismic attenuation using seismograms of P and S waves. There are three steps conducted in this study: (i) measurement of the attenuation differential using Spectral Ratio method, (ii) delay-time tomographic inversion for P and S wavespeeds, and (iii) inversion of the calculated attenuation differential values. The Spectral Ratio method conducted used an assumption that P and S wave attenuation is dependent. Vp and Vs tomographic images show a low velocity anomaly at the depth interval of 4-8 Km under the Guntur summit. On the other hand, P and S wave attenuation tomographic images show a high attenuation anomaly at the same depth interval below the Guntur summit. This observation suggests that the high attenuation anomaly of P and S waves is consistent with the low velocity anomaly. This may indicate that the low velocity zone is associated with a weak zone or a high temperature zone. In the later case, the anomaly can be interpreted as a magmatic area which has a higher temperature relative to the surrounding materials.
