This study aims to find out how social innovation can affect the resilience of rural communities in facing the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. This research is a multiple case study research with two different case studies, namely Panggungharjo Village with Pasardesa social innovations and Tamansari Village with Marketer/Komerce social innovations which have different on form, initiator, and objective of social innovations then will be compared the process of social innovation and its effect on changes in the adaptive capacity of the community to produce more general conclusions. Data were collected through interviews, documentation of previous research, and literature studies. The qualitative data was then analyzed using Miles & Huberman's interactive model. The results of the study show that despite all its limitations, social innovations can still be initiated by rural communities through actors who have high leadership and entrepreneurial attitudes, and can come from within or outside formal rural institutions. Collaboration and cooperation with parties from outside the village are needed to be able to create sustainable social innovations and have a wider impact. In the context of resilience, social innovation has also been proven to increase the adaptive capacity of rural communities to the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic. Social innovation strengthens the social capital of rural communities with a participatory process, fosters solidarity, and social innovations implementation that are responsive to the social conditions of the community during the COVID-19 pandemic. Social innovation in the two villages have become a new place for increasing solidarity, trust, and becoming a network for rural communities. Social innovation also strengthens institutional capital by increasing the capacity of local institutions and opening up to collaboration with external institutions. The presence of Pasardesa and Kampung Marketer in each village have become new players and actors who are trying to solve rural social problems due to the COVID- 19 pandemic in creative and new ways and the transformation in both of them opens networks outside the village that can affect changes in the institutional system to become more impactful and sustainable. Lastly, social innovation also strengthens entrepreneurial capital with social innovation as a new medium for entrepreneurship, market expansion, as well as increasing digital skills and entrepreneurial attitudes. This study concludes that despite its limitations, social innovations can be born and transformed in rural areas which in turn enhance the rural communities resilience. text |
