ECOLOGY-BASED DESIGN FOR THE IMPROVEMENT OF THE RIVERFRONT SETTLEMENT. CASE STUDY KAMPUNG KIDULDALEM, MALANG

The population growth in urban areas has affected the emergence of slums settlements. Malang City has a slum area of 298.22 ha in 2018. This phenomenon occurs in one of the villages in Malang City, Kiduldalem, especially on the Brantas riverfront, classified as downtown's slum area. The circu...

Based on these problems, this design focuses on restoring the ecosystem in the design area, which is located on the banks of the Brantas River, Kiduldalem Village, Malang City with an area of 8.5 ha as the study area. In this design using the principle of ecological design which is seen as the right solution to solve these problems. Therefore, the purpose of writing this thesis is to apply ecological design principles to the design of settlements on Brantas riverfront Settlement in Malang City. This design used synoptic as a rational and comprehensive method. Based on the results of the area analysis and literature review, it was decided that the area to be restructured was 4.3 ha using four design strategies, namely ecosystem protection, water conservation, energy conservation, and resource conservation. The design strategies were interpreted into several design alternatives, and then the selected alternative is developed into a design simulation. This design applied a red blocking residential area that changed the vertical residential area with water conservation, energy conservation, and resource conservation strategies. The result of the design simulation of the Brantas riverfront in Kiduldalem, Malang City, was the return of the riverfront area, previously classified as a slum, to a green area by the Ecosystem protection strategy. text
