Summary: | The presence of the Covid-19 pandemic has hampered various activities of human
life, especially in the field of education. The government closed all educational
institutions to minimize the spread of the Covid-19 virus. Learning activities in
schools are diverted into distance learning in their own homes. But the limitations
and problems that appear during distance learning make student’s productivity
decrease. Students also experienced difficulties adapting to their friends, teachers
and learning activities in school due to the lack of direct interactions. Learning
activities are considered more effective when it is done directly at school.
The governments are planning to reopen schools for face-to-face learning. In
addition to it, people’s behaviour and habits are also changed as an effort to adapt
to this pandemic. So, it’s necessary to redesign the school design to accommodate
direct learning activities and prevent the spread of the Covid-19 virus in the school
environment. Architecture serves as a container of human activities during
pandemic. Resilience in buildings is needed so that people can move comfortably
and safely during this pandemic. The architectural design of school is expected to
accommodate learning activities directly with the importance of safety and health
aspects.
This thesis proposal explores the design of high schools that has resilience to the
pandemic, through program planning and exploration of physical designs. The
school design considers the safety and health aspects for the users. The school
design is expected to create a sense of security and comfort for students to do
learning activities directly in the school. The design can support the learning
process and change their habits and mindset to be more proactive to prevent
transmission of the virus.
This school design uses 6 criteria of school design that has resilience to the
pandemic: transformative learning, interactive landscapes, physical settings,
stimulation levels, community, also health and safety. The implementation of those
criteria resulted in several important points for school design. The design is
expected to give an idea of how to design schools that are resilient to the pandemic.
So that learning activities can be done directly in schools even though we’re still in
the middle of Covid-19 pandemic. |
