STUDIES ON THE APPLICATION OF SUPER GRAPHIC FOR INDUCING POSITIVE EMOTIONS AMONG ELDERLY (CASE STUDY: ABIYOSO NURSING HOME,YOGYAKARTA)

The process of aging is a natural process faced by humans. The elderly must have experienced the problem of decline in physical and mental. The weakening function of the human brain that leads to cognitive degenerative deceases and physical disabilities usually affect the ability most elderly have to interact with their immediate environment. The purpose of this study is to analyze the impact of the old supergraphic photos applied in the Abiyoso nursing home, Yogyakarta, on the positive emotions of the elderly with the social relationship. This research, using the approach of nostalgia so can connect the experiences, emotions, and events that happen in life of the elderly. Through the connection of life or associate a memory of the inhabitants of the elderly and other specialized events, feelings, conversations, places, and others. The research involved a sample of 13 participant of the elderly aged 60 years and above from 4 different home in the Abiyoso, nursing home Yogyakarta. This study prove that elements of nostalgia were effective to elicit positive emotions of the elderly and social relations. The research applied a qualitative research method by action research using a super graphic image of old Yogyakarta city. The results showed that the elderly subjects expressed their positive emotions and are enthusiastically interact with the other occupants while explaining every picture contained in the supergraphic. The application of supergraphic induced subjects’ longing to the places they love to visit and was effective to increase desires to scrutinize; liking to invite the other occupants to share; improving pleasures after the advent of supergraphic; willingness to see it again; interests in the presence of supergraphic; improving cheerful emotions, longing, enthusiast, and the feeling of relaxing after looking at the old photos presented had induced social interactions and length of social interaction. The object category of the supergraphic had a dominant impact on positive emotions and social interaction compared to those of tradition and art categories. This can improve memory, cognitive, and mobility of the elderly. Based on the findings in this study, further research is needed on interior elements related to the presence of this visual exploration media in the gathering room such as space settings (distance and dimensions of photos, furniture layouts, seating distance, lighting in the afternoon or at night, and others). The placement of supergraphic in other spaces and ensuring the position of supergraphic laying also need to be reviewed related to positive emotions and social relationships of the elderly. It is expected to change the position of supergraphic laying on the wall in accordance with the rules of design can be used as an appropriate evaluation to be easier to understand by the elderly and not interfere with the function of other interior elements. In addition, the need for further development of supergaphic content both in terms of photo selection categories and a more diverse number of question items.
