INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/58056 Batik is one of Indonesia’s traditional textiles that acquire its pattern from a resist- dyeing process using ‘malam’ wax. Most of the patterns are inherited from generations to generations, making it a tradition for a certain community or region. The current generation of young people are reluctant to wear this traditional textile as a non-formal clothing, due to the view of it being an outdated pattern and/or textile. There is also a popular view that batik cannot be combined with trend, and the minimum option for fresh and innovative take on traditional batik patterns, contributes to the decrease of the textile’s popularity among them. At the same time, vintage-themed fashion inspired from 19th century Europe is a recurring inspiration for trends all over the world. The trend seems to be favored by youngsters, and is not perceived as old-fashioned, rather classic and timeless. Research in the form of a survey about batik will be conducted to further study the aspirations of the younger generation, and use the result as base for the development of the patterns. These patterns will then be stamped on fabric using a copper stamp, and sewn into fashion products with Romantic silhouette. Ornaments such as machine-made embroidery will also compliment the products. This research is aimed to develop batik into a pattern that is not deemed old-fashioned, and give it an updated look that fits the trend and taste of the target market. text |
