Description
Summary:Oil palm trunk is material with quality and physical and mechanical properties lower than wood. However, oil palm trunk is potential to be wood alternative if its quality is improved. One method to improve its quality is impregnation technology, which low molecular weight impregnant is entering wood so the dimensional stability is increased. This study is purposed to determine optimum concentration of oil palm shell ash in phenol formaldehyde resin for oil palm trunk impregnation based on its physical and mechanical properties. The research method used is an experiment with impregnation technology. Impregnant variation used are 0% (PA0), 1% (PA1), 3% (PA2), 5% (PA3), and 10% (PA4) concentration of oil palm shell ash in phenol formaldehyde resin. The experimental design used are CRD (Completely Random Design) with post-hoc DMRT (Duncan Multiple Range Test) analysis. Each treatment was carried out three replications. The observed parameters are polymer content, density increased percentage, anti swelling efficiency (ASE), modulus of elasticity (MOE), modulus of rupture (MOR), tensile strength, and screw test. The result shown that PA2 is the optimum impregnant treatment for oil palm trunk impregnation with polymer content 9,673%, density increased 19,096%, tensile strength 306,349 kgf/cm2 , MOE 3276,510 kgf/cm3 , MOR 262,161 kgf/cm3 , and screw pull strength 6,140 kgf/cm2 .
