THE PUBLIC LIBRARY AS A THIRD PLACE IN PESANGGRAHAN, SOUTH JAKARTA

The public libray is currently the least preferred place for the public to visit for leisure activites. Due to the digital revolution and the impression that libraries tend to be formal, serious, and closed off, libraries are losing their relevance in society. In response to this, in this era the public library has developed into a community center for learning together and social interaction, so it has potential to become an ideal third space. This project is an attempt to respond to this development by utilizing the potential of the library as a third space, so that the library can live as a center for community activities. The project is in the form of a sub-district public library located in Pesanggrahan, South Jakarta, close to the center of other community activities such as public and social facilities and residential areas. To apply the concept of the third space, the design is based on the characteristics of the third room according to Oldenburg. These characteristics are translated to the architectural language to obtain the issuesthat become the focus of the design, which are as follows; social interaction and community development, an attractive, friendly, and low-profile image, accessibility and good accommodation for all people, as well as user comfort and convenience. In the design of the library, an attractive and friendly image is achieved by the composition of the library mass which is divided into three with varying heights, and with a glass facade that depicts the activities in it. The low profile image is achieved by a building height of only 1 floor so it does not have the impression of being too grand and intimidating. In order to support social interaction and community formation, there are many community functions in the library, using furniture that is arranged in a sociopetal manner. In order to have good accessibility and accommodation, the library's design applies the principles of universal design and is integrated with elements of nature such as plants and water to accommodate relaxation. The library's comfort and convenience is achieved by natural lighting, artificial ventilation according to library regulations, and organization of space functions based on the noise level.
