Summary: | In this research, we will investigate the effectiveness of groyne in reducing erosion
and shoreline protection of sandy beach, particularly Sanur Beach in Bali. One of
the root causes of erosion in sandy beach is littoral transport. Littoral transport is
the movement of sand parallel to the shoreline due to wave of sea water hitting the
shoreline. Groyne is a type of breakwater installed perpendicular to the shoreline
protruding to the sea. Over time, groyne will naturally split the two sides into the
updrift and downdrift sides. The existence of groyne will reduce littoral transport,
cause precipitation of sand at the updrift side, and cause sand by-passing to happen
to the downdrift side in the long run. These three things significantly reduce the
damage caused by erosion and make groyne one of the effective shoreline
protection measure of sandy beach. The mathematical model that will be used as
the foundation of this research is the Pelnard-Considere one-line model. We will
first solve the equation analytically for various scenarios of shoreline topologies by
using the variable substitution and Laplace transform method. On top of that, we
will conduct numerical simulations using the BTCS and Crank-Nicolson method
on the same scenarios to then compare the result with the analytical solution we
have derived previously. Lastly, the same numerical simulation framework will be
applied to investigate the shoreline evolution of a real segment in Sanur Beach |
