Litsea, known as Huru or Medang in Indonesia, is one of the genus of Lauraceae family consisting of 478 species. This genus has a wide use as construction materials and traditional medicines, to treat skin disease and stomachache. Secondary metabolites isolated from this genus alkaloid, terpenoid, flavonoid, and aryl-propanoid types. Some of secondary metabolites have important activities as anti HIV, anti cancer, and anti bacterial. Isolation of secondary metabolites from ethyl acetate extract of Litsea javanica stem bark conducted in this experiment has yielded several compounds, one of which has been characterized as (-)-epicatechin. The compounds were obtained by fractionation and purification by using various chromatography techniques, such as vacuum liquid chromatography and radial chromatography. The structure of the compound was elucidated based on UV, IR, and NMR spectra. |
