Stability in power system is very important to ensure the continuity of electrical power distribution. An unstable operation of power system may lead to cascading failure and cause a blackout. One of the major contingencies of a power system is due to imbalance between loads and generated electric power. Load shedding is an action of reducing the load of a power system in order to restore balance. Conventional load shedding schemes are typically used with a preset step-level structure which identifies the amount of load to be shed. However, this method has many disadvantages. Over-shedding is one of the major problems of conventional load shedding scheme because it sheds excess loads which are undesirable and can cause an increase of frequency in power system which may lead further to loss of generation. Furthermore, it does not have any concern with voltage related problems. Adaptive load shedding scheme is able to resolve these problems because it adapts with the power imbalance and shed the proper amount of load. It can also be arranged to consider load priority for convenience and the voltage sensitivities to maintain the voltage stability. The object of this research is the Batam-Bintan power system in Riau Islands Province, Indonesia. The aim of this research is to create the most effective and efficient load shedding scheme by calculating the proper amount of load to be shed at each location based on the frequency decline rate and voltage sensitivities. text |
