Summary:GIS (Gas Insulated Switchgear) is a high voltage equipment that utilizes pressurized gas as an insulating medium. As other insulating materials, both solid and liquid, gas also has the potential to fail in carrying out its function as an insulating material which can disrupt the GIS function. One technique that can be implemented to diagnose gas conditions in GIS is detecting the presence of partial discharge. Previous studies have proven that the partial discharge phenomenon has different characteristics for each type of isolation. Research on partial discharge in GIS can be implemented either through simulation or experiment. Currently in the High Voltage and Current ITB Laboratory, there is a GIS tube model that can be used as a medium for research. However, the experimental setup for testing is not yet available because the SF6 gas inlet and outlet system for the GIS model has not been created yet. Therefore, the preliminary research will be prioritized to design the inlet and outlet systems of the SF6 for that GIS model. Furthermore, research will be conducted to determine the characteristics of PD from several sources that may occur in a GIS which is modeled through a needle-plate. The diagnosis is carried out using the UHF sensor that is already installed on the GIS model in the form of a double half circular antenna (bow tie type). In addition, other sensors are also used such as Loop Antenna, RC Detector, HFCT (High Frequency Current Transformer), and TEV (Transient Earth Voltage). As a comparison to the PD results in the GIS, the PD data test was also carried out on air insulation media. The results of this study are expected to be the first step for the next GIS research at the ITB TTAT Laboratory which can have a positive impact on the development of the electricity world.
