Summary: | Silica microcapsules have been used for wide range of application in engineering goods,
especially in controlled released application for medical application (e.g drug delivery
system) and high performance textile. They have porous structure with particle size 0,1 11m -
50 11m and contain active compound. In this study, silica microcapsules were synthesized by
combining emulsion and sol gel technique. Characteristic structure of silica microcapsules is
related to sol gel process, while microcapsules shape and size are related to emulsion process.
Precursor containing tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) , HCl, and tetrahydroxybenzophenone (THBP) is
emulsified into cyclohexane and sorbitan monostearate (span 60) as nonionic surfactant. The
morphology of silica microcapsules was characterized by SEM, encapsulation of hydrophilic active
compound was characterized by FTIR, particle size and pore structure of silica microcapsules were
characterized by BET. With results of SEM observation, silica microcapsules with spherical
structure were found in 1 and 2 % wt surfactants concentration. With results of FTIR
characterization, hydrophilic active compound can be encapsulated into silica microcapsule. With
result of BET characterization, silica microcapsules containing 2 % wt surfactant concentration
have specific surface area 292,86 m2/g and average pore radius 13,15 angstrom.
