| Summary: | Formulas of cream containing Kappaphycus alvarezii powder as sunscreen had been developed using olive oil and paraffin liquidum as base, combination of Tween 80 and Span 80 as emulgator, cetylalcohol as viscosity enhancer, tocopherol acetate as an antioxidant, and nipagin-nipazol as preservative. Sunscreen activity and the cream safety were determined in vivo using New Zealand albino rabbit as animal model. The pH, globul size, and organoleptic profile of all cream formulas contained 1, 2, and 5percent of Kappaphycus alvarezii powder, either with 20percent of olive oil or paraffin liquidum, 5 percent combination of Tween 80-Span 80, and 3percen of cetylalcohol were not changed during the evaluations, while the cream viscosity increased significantly. Cream contained 5percen of Kappaphycus alvarezii powder gave the highest sun protection effect with a sun protection factor of 4.77, and have no irritant effect on the rabbit skin, however its showed slightly irritation effect on rabbit eyes with a conjungtiva score of 0.267 on the safesty test. |
