Description
Summary:The Pintu Besar Selatan district is an area in Glodok that has not yet revived after the riot that happened during 1998’s Reformation era. All the abandoned buildings around the district have became silent witnesses of the looting and violence that took place on that sad tragedy. On the other hand, the residents don’t seem to want to bring up their old scars from 20 years ago. Although at the same time, they also don’t know how to functionalize or make use of all the abandoned buildings. Even so, half of the shabby and unmaintained pedestrian’s corridor has seemed to evolve as a comfortable place to create for the street artist community that has existed ever since the 1990s. Because of this condition, there need to be an effort to revitalize the area in order to overcame the setbacks in Pintu Besar Selatan. This report aims to discuss a design of an art gallery with other supporting facilities in an attempt to bring back a sense of place between all the abandoned places 20 years after being deserted by the local residents. The design attempt itself is being focused on strengthening the existence of local community and the potential of the creative space in Pintu Besar Selatan along with responding the historical background of the district.
