Unfortunately, there are still groups of people who have difficulty in getting a good and proper education. The condition of children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) who are hampered in terms of the development of social, communication, and imagination skill makes it difficult for them to adapt in a school environment. Through an issue-based design approach, the Special School for Autism Spectrum Disorder in Bekasi was carried out as the solution to the need for educational and guidance facilities for children with autism. This project is a fictitious project built on an area of 7.834 m2 on Zamrud Selatan 3 Street, Dukuh Zamrud Housing Estate, Mustikajaya District, Bekasi, West Java and is planned to accommodate education and life coaching activities for children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Bekasi, especially those who are not able to attend regular nor inclusive schools due to their severe condition. This school project will accommodate elementary, middle school, and high school levels and focus on developing children’s social skill and independence with several facilities such as basic academic program, transition program, vocational classes, therapy, and staff training program. There are four design issues that are formulated based on the problems found related to the site and conditions of autism users, i.e. ideal learning environment for autism children, safety, security, and circulation & wayfinding. Based on these four issues, ‘Space and Perception’ is created as the main design concept of this project which will focus on the sensory input so that it is more easily processed by autism users. The main goal of this concept is to create a comforting yet stimulating environment. In other words, this school project is expected to calm autism users with a sensory input that adjust to their condition and need, as well as being able to stimulate users’ sensory. text
