Summary: | Indonesia is an archipelago country formed by various pieces of culture. Sustainable culture in a region will become the identity of the region itself, ranging from arts such as dances and songs, traditional clothing, traditional houses, and even material locality. Jatiwangi is a sub-district in Majalengka Regency, West Java with an area of ??40.03 m2 known for its clay culture which is transformed into terracotta products. Terracotta is pottery covered with glaze, which comes from processed burned clay, Jatiwangi itself is known for its roofing tiles to bricks as a cultural representation of the region. The roofing tile factory or called jebor by locals, is a place where terracotta products are made, roofing tile is not the only product produced in the factory. Bricks, ridges, pasted bricks, and ceramics for floors are also often produced on jebor. The number of roofing tile industries in Jatiwangi has continued to increase since the early 1980s-1990s to reach 630 jebors, but the monetary crisis in 1998 drew many roof tile businesses until there were 500 left, and over time it continued to decrease until 2018 there were only 150 units left. Of the remaining 150 roofing tile factories in Jatiwangi, only 20% are still producing terracotta products, giving rise to a lot of negative spaces in the form of abandoned jebors.
The project is planned to be built on an area of ??11,500 m², with building coverage ratio of 0.7 and a floor average ratio of 1.4. This project is primarily intended to accommodate terracotta production and a research and development center that is more like a workshop. This factory area is also intended to represent terracotta both in buildings and landscapes. This is intended to emphasize the terracotta character of the factory and restore the public's attraction to visit and learn about the culture of the land through jebor.
There are two main issues raised in designing this project, namely the functions integration between the building which covers the issue of zoning and access separation, as well as the presence of a fresh image of the jebor. The issue of integration between building functions was also raised because the circulation for the manager and visitors must be separated, this is intended so that both parties feel comfortable when roaming around or working in the factory area. Meanwhile, the issue of presenting a new image in buildings is important because solving this issue can bring a new ambience to jebor. This new atmosphere is obtained through the development of areas related to a comfortable working environment for factory workers, awareness of the usage of terracotta materials in the field, and visitor-friendly design so that more activities can be carried out by visitors. In addition, the concept of industrial tourism also emphasizes that visitors can see the product processing process at the factory clearly, so an exceptional circulation system is needed for visitors. |
