Summary: | Urban food security is one of the big problems in crisis times. Food supplies in suburban areas are difficult to be accessed by urban residents due to various factors, so the Bandung City Government initiated an urban farming program to develop local-to-urban-scaled food security. On the other hand, the other problem in Bandung City is the inadequate handling of organic waste, especially vegetables and fruit, which are wasted without proper processing. Food Hub project was initiated to shorten the food cycle path, accommodates food cycle activities, such as production, distribution, consumption, decomposition, and other activities, as well as assisting the development of healthy, ideal, and sustainable urban farming ideas.
Food Hub project is located east of Caringin Wholesale Market with a site area of ??around 11,000 m2 and is easily accessible from the main transportation network in Bandung City as well as from agricultural suburbs. The project was initiated by the Bandung City Department of Food and Agriculture with Bandung City residents as their target, especially agricultural or urban farming communities from both within and outside the city. Food Hub accommodates commercial greenhouses, organic waste processing facilities, commercial retails, research facilities, and supporting facilities. The site and mass composition correspond the functional needs of the Food Hub and the morphology of Caringin market by following the pattern of surrounding masses. Outer and inner spaces are composed to optimize food production area and attract visitors’ attention with ‘garden building’ concept. There is one main mass that accommodates production, research, distribution, and consumption activities, as well as one supporting mass that accommodates recycling organic waste activity and supporting functions, with both masses are 4 stories tall. The building uses steel as the main construction material and has a greenhouse facade composition as the main architectural feature of Food Hub Caringin. |
