Summary: | Sumbersari is one of the main destinations for students to stay temporarily while pursuing higher education in Malang City. However, the low social cohesion between the community and students causes the high crime rate in the area. In addition to that, there is an expansion of illegal buildings that are less livable due to the high demand for cheap boarding houses. The project was designed with the hope of increasing social interaction as the key to social cohesion between local residents, between students, as well as between local residents and students. The project also supports State University of Malang to accommodate 25% of its new students. The project location is on Jl. Ambarawa Dalam, Sumbersari, Malang City and was chosen because it is located right between densely populated settlements and the State University of Malang campus so that it can be a meeting point for local residents and students. The facilities will include the function of a community center and dormitory with four user groups, that are students, local residents, general visitors, and administrators. Placemaking and modularity are taken as the basic design concepts. Within the site, horizontal and vertical zoning is based on the user's level of privacy. Meanwhile, the composition of the building mass is generated by responding to the site context and applying permeability and welcoming community as the criteria of placemaking. Other three placemaking namely accessibility, sociability, and legibility will be the main strategy in building spatial strategies. The building envelope will respond to the climatic context and the characteristics of the State of University of Malang’s new buildings. On-site safety issues were addressed by accommodating passive surveillance to its surrounding and generating lively street on the podium level. The structural system of the building uses steel columns and beams with load-bearing walls at some areas. |
