Summary: | The prevalence of mental health disorders in Bekasi keeps increasing each year. However, the state of existing mental health facilities is not optimized enough to support the patients' recovery process. Many of them have not yet applied the principles of community-based mental health care, in which the whole treatment process has been shifted from clinical-individualist to social-productive. The emergence of bad stigma caused by the lack of public understanding also hinders the recovery process for people with mental disorders. Therefore, this project offers as a solution by presenting a mental health facility that not only provides treatments, but also increases the public acceptance.
This project is located on Jalan Alun-Alun Utara, Vida Bekasi with an area of 16.000 m2. The location was chosen due to good accessibility and low sensory impulses. In addition, the site is adjacent to a farm and community center. With its natural and social potential, this project is designed through a fundamental concept called “healing in serenity,” which integrates four prominent components in recovery process, namely nature, interaction, security, and privacy, into an environment.
The zoning is based on five functions that will be accommodated in the facility: (1) promotive aspect consisting of green open space and the other public facilities, (2) preventive aspect consisting of outpatient unit, (3) curative aspect consisting of treatments unit, (4) rehabilitative aspect consisting of rehabilitation unit and gardening area, and (5) supporting aspect consisting of service and utility. Building mass with circular shape and enclosed courtyard is intended to eliminate the impression of formal institutional design and to create a variety of spatial experiences for the users. Water installation also plays a vital role in the design as a non-rhythmic sensory stimuli that brings a sense of serenity. These things are designed to achieve a therapeutic environment that is not only beneficial for people with mental disorders, but also by the public to relax and restore their state of mind. |
