INSTITUT TEKNOLOGI BANDUNG https://digilib.itb.ac.id/gdl/view/59716 Rapid growth of population in Jakarta encourages private developers to build more formal housing. Unstrict inspection toward the development, along with the demand from a segment of society who is able to purchase formal housing, transforms undeveloped parcels of land in peri-urban area of Jakarta into expensive gated communities which are not settled evenly, whereas the other part of society in the bottom tier who is not wealthy enough to purchase those housing can only expand their settlement iteratively using the remaining land in between the gated communities. This phenomenon causes social segregation which is worsened by the homogeneity in those two polar of society; the Chinese settlers who are non-Muslim dominating the upper tier while ‘pribumi’ settlers who are Muslim dominating the other one. To alleviate the tension of the socio-spatial segregation, while taking advantage from an empty parcel of land planned for commercial use in a gated community, a 4-stories lifestyle center which welcomes both polar can be built inclusively. The inclusivity is interpreted through fully functional green areas, neutral design which is unassociated with any of religious or racial group and universal design that promotes social participation. Those concepts are implemented into an enormous continuous elevated retail park and radial space configuration. The building massing is divided into two conjoined masses which partly encapsulates the elevated retail park. Two giant voids are placed in the middle of those two masses and serve as public area to maximize visual access triggering social interaction. The building façade is made from natural material to prevent high-class perception and the building’s structural system is constructed from concrete frame structure with a dilatation in between the conjoined part of the masses. text |
