Summary: | In Bandung, the growing number of street children is a very serious concern that needs to be addressed. In the urban environment, this can cause slums, increase the number of children dropping out of school, increase the number of crimes, and many other problems. In 2018, the city of Bandung had the highest percentage of street children among other big cities in West Java, which was 75%. This is a challenge for the government in order to achieve its vision of a prosperous and comfortable city. There have been many efforts made by government agencies and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs). Nonetheless, the problem remains incomplete and continues to linger.
Considering the problems described above, the best approach would be to provide facilities for street children that correspond to their needs and character, such as the Street Children Rehabilitation Center. The facility employs a center-based approach that functions as a rehabilitative correctional facility, which not only provides educational activities, but also improves the quality of life of its residents on a psychological, skill, and health level. Hopefully this facility will give street kids the opportunity to become productive, independent individuals and to be accepted back into the community.
The basic concept of the Street Children Rehabilitation Center is to provide a healthy environment, to build sustainable buildings, and to integrate them into the community. To implement this concept, natural lighting and ventilation are utilized, an outdoor area is created as a place to learn and interact, as well as urban farming as a supply of food and income so facilities can be independent and self-sufficient. The building mass has a house-like concept, welcoming and accepting street children, facilitating interaction, and providing supervision. Building mass is composed of a series of composite masses arranged around an open space. The building mass is also arranged by levels of privacy, and there is a clear separation between public and private spaces. |
