Description
Summary:Abstract:

To reduce structure response due to earthquake load, passive mass damper system called passive tuned mass damper has been developed. Passive mass damper system consists of a mass that located at the top of the building. Beside passive tuned mass damper, active tuned mass damper is also developed, but it is still more expensive than passive mass damper system. To obtain effective damping, passive mass damper system requires large mass. This invites risky problem against large earthquake. This final assignment studies about an alternative to avoid hazardous of structure failure, by hanging the mass. This system is called Pendulum Tuned Mass Damper (PTMD). Using the rod of pendulum, the large mass is not always located at the top of the structure. Beside for safety, PTMD is lower of cost than active mass damper system. This final assignment also studies about the influence of changing the rod and mass to damping obtained. To determine the level of damping, response of the structure due to earthquake must be calculated. In this final assignment, the response of the structure is calculated by using Runge-Kutta numerical method. The structure is imposed by 8 kinds of earthquake, for the purpose of obtaining structure response for different loads. This study shows the damping of PTMD is affected by the length of rod and also the mass of pendulum. Study about PTMD should be developed in the future because the capable structure against earthquake load is progressively important.
