Summary: | The plant cultivation system using a raised bed is suitable for small agricultural land (micro-farming) which is environmentally friendly because it does not cultivate (hoe) the soil. In this system, the planting media is consisted of compost, organic fertilizer, litter, and soil, with a cardboard base. This study aims to determine the composition of layered planting media that gives the best results on the growth and biomass production of maize (Zea mays var. Bimmo) in a raised bed system. The research was carried out at the Educational Gardens, SITH ITB, in Haurngombong Village, Sumedang, from October 2020 - April 2021. The design research was a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) consisting of 3 treatments of planting media composition, namely TP (soil, manure), STPK (litter, soil, manure, compost), and STPKM (litter, soil, manure, compost, mulch), with 9 replications. The parameters observed in the study were growth, biomass production, physical, chemical, and biological parameters of the growing media, and the final conditions of the growing media and installation. Growth parameters include plant height, number of leaves, and relative growth rate. Meanwhile, the parameters of biomass production are wee weight, stover weight, and root-root ratio. The physical parameters of the media were included bulk density and porosity. Chemical parameters are the content of C, N, P, K, Ca, Mg and Na, and biological parameters are the number of soil organisms. The parameters of the final condition of the installation are wood damage and the final condition of the media is weathering of cardboard. The results showed that the STPK treatment gave the best results on the growth parameters of the RGR value of 34.14% and plant height of 35.77%, while the TP treatment gave the best results on the growth parameter of the number of leaves of 33.96%. The TP treatment gave the best results on the biomass production parameters, the root-shoot ratio of 44.78% and wee weight of 62.97%. While the STPK treatment gave the best results on the biomass production parameter of stover weight of 41.56%. The parameters of bulk density, porosity, and the number of soil organisms were best on STPK media, respectively, at 0.49 g/cm3; 81.73%; and 272 tails. The final condition of cardboard weathering was 100% on all media and the best installation condition was on STPKM media with 25% damage, so based on results, STPK treatment gave the best results in increasing growth and TP treatment gave the best results in increasing corn biomass production.
