Design failure defined as the failure of the engineering design to meet client expectations and/or engineering standard. The effect of design failure could lead into unplanned additional cost during construction, major rework during design or construction, or even safety risk to the user. Case study in PLANA (a multinational building engineering company) shows that design failure problem can be mitigated by finding the root cause of the previous problems and selecting the improvement by using Analytical Hierarchy Process with input from internal and independent experts. Common cause of design failure addressed in this case study are incorrect design input, faulty engineering process, and lack of coordination. Main problem found in this research are requirement gathering method and additional problem task management problem & quality management problem also found within the company. Research process start by conducting focus discussion group (FGD) with representative of the project team to find the root cause of the client complaint in last 1 year. Result from FGD is used as input for structured interview with top level management expert to create possible solutions. Final recommendations selected by using Analytical Hierarchy Process (AHP) by considering input from internal and external experts. text |
