Description
Summary:The significant cause of fatigue is sleep deprivation and sleep disruption. The main concern as a cause of fatigue for freight train drivers is the duration of travel that often exceeds the established official schedule, as happened in the Regional Division IV of PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI), Tanjungkarang, Lampung. The general objective of this research is to determine the factors that cause drowsiness and fatigue experienced by the driver. The causative factors are classified into two parts, namely work and non-work factors. In addition, this study also has an additional purpose, namely determining the risk of fatigue experienced by the driver. This research was conducted through a qualitative study with two types of instruments, namely the Fatigue Evaluation questionnaire (involving 40 participants) and semi-structured interviews (involving 21 participants). The Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) and Morningness-Eveningness Questionnaire (MEQ) were also used to measure circadian rhytm and sleep quality in the last one month. The use of these two different research instruments showed similar results. The result shows that work factors which are the main contributors to fatigue risk are the lengthy duration of train travel and start time that is too tight (demands for work patterns and work duration), as well as inconsistent train management systems (organizational problems). Meanwhile, non-work factors that are the main contributors are the poor level of cleanliness and comfort in locomotive and griya karya Ketapang (quality of work facilities), as well as the realization of non-optimal rest durations between services and holidays (support and attention dari management). This study found that fatigue risk is at level 3 based on an assessment of the Fatigue Risk Trajectory (FRT). Some management recommendations that can be applied by PT KAI are the design of an official schedule for the driver, increasing the duration of vacation or recovery (recovery) and rest duration, improving the quality of the machinist's work environment, improving the communication system between the driver and the fire trip controller (PPKP), as well as increasing management support and attention to machinists in the form of physical, psychological, and material.
