Description
Summary:Oil palm trunks (OPT) have the potential as a sustainable source of wood for various uses such as furniture, household appliances, etc. However, in its utilization, processing is needed because the structure of OPT is brittle and unstable. One of processing methods to improve the quality of OPT is impregnation technology which is a wood preservation process that includes low molecular weight resin compound. The aim of this study was to determine the optimum concentration of OPT impregnated with oil palm shell (OPS) and phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin on wood machining properties. The research method used is an experimental method of impregnation technology with five variations in OPS concentration, there are 0% (PA0), 1% (PA1), 3% (PA2), 5% (PA3) and 10% (PA4). Each treatment was repeated three times. The test of machining properties refers to ASTM D1666. Wood machining is one of the parameters to determine the quality of wood products which includes planing, shaping, shading, boring, and turning aspects. The quality of the machining results is observed visually then calculating defects percentage that appear on the surface of the sample after the machining process and classifying into five quality classes. The results shown PA4 had good machining properties or class II, except in the planing and shaping aspects which were classified as moderate or class III. so it could be used for any process, especially wall panel. however, it need carefully processed.
