The existence of the mangrove ecosystem in the City of Surabaya play an important role as the protector of the coastal area of Surabaya City as well as a sequester and storage of carbon emissions produced by various human activities. Information about the structure of mangrove communities and their ability to store carbon is an important information related to mangrove rehabilitation and conservation efforts. Therefore, this study aims to describe and compare the structure of mangrove communities at three different mangrove ecotourism locations in Surabaya and to estimate the carbon stocks at these three locations. Locations 1 and 2 are located at Wonorejo Mangrove Ecotourism Area. Location 1 is a mangrove which is located near the coastline and directly facing the sea while Location 2 is a mangrove that leads to land. Location 3 is located at the Gunung Anyar Mangrove Ecotourism Area and is a mangrove that leads to land. On each site there are six 10x10m observation plots placed randomly. The data taken in the field includes species name, stage of life, and DBH (diameter at breast height). Soil samples taken from three points on each plot are then made composite and taken to a laboratory for analysis of bulk density and organic carbon content. The results of the Important Value Index calculation showed that the two mangrove species in the tree phase which predominate in each location were Avicennia marina (139.07%) and Avicennia alba (121.33%) at Location 1, Rhizophora mucronata (109.96%) and Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (76.82%) at Location 2, as well as Avicennia marina (190.18%) and Avicennia alba (82.94%) at Location 3. The two dominant species in the sapling phase were Bruguiera gymnorrhiza (131.59%) and Rhizophora mucronata (128.02%) at Location 2 as well as Avicennia marina (180.74%) and Avicennia alba (119.26%) at Location 3. At Location 1 there is only one species of mangrove in the sapling phase, namely Rhizophora mucronata. The Diversity Index for the tree phase are 0,99; 1,26; and 0,77 respectively while for the sapling phase are 0,92 and 0,67. The Evenness Index for the tree phase are 0,62; 0,70; and 0,56 respectively while for the sapling phase are 0.84 and 0.96. The Dominance Index for the tree phase are 0.43; 0,36; 0.56 respectively while for sapling phase are 0.43 and 0.52. The calculation of the Similarity Index shows that between one location and another location is a different community (<50%). The estimated total carbon stock at each location are 497.78; 593,31; and 640.93 MgC/ha respectively. Carbon stored as aboveground biomass, belowground, and soil organic carbon differ significantly from location to location (P<0.05), but the total carbon stock between locations does not differ significantly (P>0.05). In general, the estimated carbon stocks at the three locations are within the range of carbon stocks that have been reported in mangrove ecosystems in Indonesia. text
