Summary: | Water quality index (WQI) is a tool used to determine the overall water quality status in a single term so the application of WQI for surface water assessment is expected to help the general public understand the condition of surface water around them better. As the longest and biggest river in West Java Province, Citarum River holds an important role in the life of the community around it. Therefore, this research aims to determine the most suitable WQI Method to determine Citarum River’s water quality. This research utilizes BPLHD of West Java Province monitoring data regarding Citarum River’s water quality from four observing points along the Upstream Citarum. The WQI determination on this research was based on National Sanitation Foundation WQI (NSF WQI) Method, and Oregon Water Quality Index (OWQI) Method to determine Citarum River’s water quality index. On this research, the monitoring data was grouped into wet – dry month data, wet-dry year data, data per monitoring station, and data per year of monitoring. The data was processed and the determination of WQI was done by using Mircosoft Excel. Lastly, the determination of the most suitable WQI method was based on the advantages and disadvantages of each method. Based on NSF WQI Method, Citarum River obtained a ‘Medium’ and ‘Bad’ water quality status; based on CCME WQI Method, Citarum River obtained a ‘Fair’, ‘Marginal’, and
‘Bad’ water quality status; and based on OWQI Method, Citarum River obtained a
‘Very Poor’ water quality status. The research shows that NSF WQI Method is the
most suitable method to determine Citarum River’s water quality.
