Description
Summary:Hypertension is an asymptomatic chronic disease; uncontrolled blood pressure can cause complication which lead to death. Hence, therapy must be done to maintain blood pressure, especially to prevent the complication which is organ failure. Binahong (Anredera cordifolia (Ten.) Steenis) and Tempuyung (Sonchus arvensis L.) are two plants that are traditionally used for lowering blood pressure, each ethanolic extract and in the form of combination, both proven to lower blood pressure in in vitro and in vivo experiments. Considering the potential of two plants as antihypertensive, a combination of binahong and tempuyung’s aqueous extract can be made in the form of capsule. This research aims to determine antihypertensive effect of combination aqueous extract of binahong and tempuyung. Screening antihypertensive effect of aqueous extract done by comparing with ethanolic extract at same dose 50-50 mg/kg bb on adrenaline-induced hypertensive rat, after 30 minutes of adrenaline 0.9 mg/kg bb administration, combination of water extract at 50-50 mg/kg bb significantly lowering blood pressure (p<0,05) with higher percent inhibition of blood pressure rise than ethanolic extract. Based on this result, it was continued to test the effect of combination aqueous extract with various doses at 25-25, 50-50, 100-100 mg/kg bb and administration each extract at dose 100 mg/kg bb on dexamethasone 1.5 mg/kg bb-induced hypertensive rat. The three doses of combination and each aqueous extract of plants significantly lowering blood pressure after 7 days therapy (p<0.05), combination of aqueous extract at dose 50-50 mg/kg bb showed a better lowering blood pressure than 25- 25 mg/kg bb and 100-100 mg/kg bb. But statistically, all three doses showed a comparable result on lowering blood pressure (p>0.05).
