THE EFFECTIVENESS OF IRON INJECTION ON THE IMPROVEMENT OF ANEMIC STATUS IN PREGNANT MOTHERS AS WELL AS HEALTH DEVELOPMENT OF MOTHER AND THE NEWBORN AT RUMAH SAKIT IBU DAN ANAK AL ISLAM BANDUNG

Iron deficiency anemia in pregnant women has negative impacts on mother and the fetus. Mother can experience dysphagia, decreased body resistance to infection, lethargy, fatigue and even death, in addition to causing mortality and fetomaternal morbidity. Premature labor, abortion, decreased immune status and stunted fetal growth, babies born to pregnant women who suffer from anemia are at risk of being born with low birth weight. This study aimed to explore the effectiveness of iron injection on anemia status in pregnant women and the development of maternal and fetal health, as expressed by healthy pregnancy period and the outcomes of the newborn, adequate weight and normal APGAR score. This study was participated by 112 pregnant subjects in their first and third trimester who were diagnosed with anemia and checked for ferritin level at Rumah Sakit Ibu dan Anak Al-Islam during the period of March 1 –December 31 2020. Eighty-four subjects received iron injection and gave birth at Rumah Sakit Al-Islam, meanwhile there were 28 subjects checked for ferritin level but not exposed to iron injection who gave birth at the same hospital. Comparative analyses were carried out to compare anemic patients with and without iron injection, using Mann-Whitney method. Results showed that iron injection significantly (p<0.05) affected anemic status and the development of mother’s health, represented by Hb level and body weight. The results further showed significant correlation (p<0.05) between anemia and low birth weight and asphyxia in the newborn. Taken together, results of the present study demonstrate the essential of iron injection for the health of pregnant mothers and their newborns.
