Summary:In recent years, there has been a growing interest in researching and utilization of rambutan peel (Nephelium lappaceum L.). Rambutan peel has been known for its high phenolic content and activity, such as antioxidant and antibacterial to protect skin from free radical and bacterial infection. Through this literature review, antioxidant activity of rambutan peel extract (RPE) was known by DPPH scavenging agent determination with IC50 = 8,668 µg/mL. While topical antibacterial activity of RPE was determined by broth dilution with MIC = 3,2 mg/mL. In order to attain its purpose of use, formulation semi-solid product of RPE has been developed, such as cream and gel. Selection excipient and the amount of excipient can affect its physical appearance, drug and product stability and permeability of drug. Therefore, formulation of semi-solid product has to be reviewed and rationalized for optimization formula. Based on its physical stability and appearance, RPE with concentration < 1,5% is best formulated in gel preparation, whereas RPE with concentration ?1,5% is best formulated in cream preparation.
