For this reason, development of material testing apparatus is necessary. Split Hopkinson shear bar has been developed, but it has not been standardized due to the complexity of the data analysis. Split Hopkinson shear bar (SHSB) is a testing device to obtain shear stress-shear strain curve of a material under impact loading. It works by measuring the strain wave that is then converted into stress-strain curve. There are three techniques in conducting the SHSB test: punch, double-notch, and hat-shaped. In this research, Author tries to optimize the hat-shaped specimen by studying the effect of fillet radius on the specimen. Finite element analysis will be conducted to study the effect of fillet radius on the hat-shaped specimen using Abaqus CAE simulation. To validate the simulation, the data obtained from finite element analysis will be compared to the data obtained from experiment. Once the simulation is deemed as valid, the analysis can be done. Two series of hat-shaped specimen is studied. The first series is called HS1 which has the positive shear angle, and the second series is called HS2 which has the negative shear angle. This study conclude that the most optimum hat-shaped specimen is HS1 with the fillet radius of 0.2 mm since it has the purest shear stress as well as acceptable strain rate gradient and force discrepancy. text |
