Description
Summary:Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is one of the main causes of disability in child development. It is estimated that one in 160 children worldwide has ASD. The etiology of ASD has been tied to several causative factors, including gene mutations, abnormalities in brain development, and geneticenvironment interactions. The purpose of this study was to examine the results of studies that provide an overview of the relationship between arachidonic acid and its metabolites and the pathology of ASD. The data used in this literature review was obtained from the search using Google Scholar and PubMed which screened 87 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The results show the involvement of the arachidonic acid cascade in ASD pathology that takes in several metabolic pathways, namely cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase, endocannabinoids and the hydrogenation reaction of the arachidonic acid. These metabolic pathways also interact with genetic, oxidative stress, and immunological events thus providing a wide range of clinical manifestations that are hypothesized to be part of the ASD pathology.
