Description
Summary:Clove (Syzygium aromaticum) belongs to the Myrtaceae family which has been widely cultivated in Indonesia. This literature review focuses on the effect of metabolite content and clove extract on its pharmacological activity. Cloves have primary metabolites, such as protein and carbohydrates. The secondary metabolites found in cloves are alkaloids, saponins, tannins, glycosides, flavonoids, and essential oils. Cloves have been used in traditional medicine to relieve pain, inhibit pathogens, flatulence, nausea, toothache, and diabetes. The essential oil and clove extract exhibit various pharmacological activities, including antibacterial, antifungal, antiviral, antioxidant, anticholinesterase, antidiabetic, cytotoxic, anesthetic, antithrombotic, and anticarcinogenic. The use of cloves, eugenol and i;?s essential oil can be further developed as new drugs.
