Sengon wood (Falcataria moluccana) and coconut fiber currently appear to be the most feasible alternative raw materials in wood-based industries such as the plywood industry. However, coconut fiber also has some limitations such as high water absorption and swelling. Therefore, modifying the coconut fiber surface is used to overcome these weaknesses. Alkalization process is the easiest, cheapest, and most effective fiber surface modification process. This modified coconut fiber is used as a veneer replacement layer in a plywood product known as hybrid plywood (KLH). This study aims to determine the optimal concentration of NaOH in producing physical and mechanical properties of KLH products. Coconut fiber was soaked in NaOH at room temperature according to various concentrations (0%, 5%, 10%, and 15%) for 60 minutes. The modified coconut fiber was then combined with sengon wood veneer (alternating layers between veneer and coconut fiber) using phenol formaldehyde (PF) resin at a weight of 300 g/m2. Next, the arrangement was compressed using a cold press at room temperature for 10 minutes, and a hot press (150°C, pressure 20N/mm2) for 10 minutes to form a five-layer KLH. Tests carried out in the form of specific gravity test, water absorption (WA), swelling coefficient (SC), screw holding power, internal adhesive strength, % damage, and delamination test. The results revealed that the 10% NaOH alkalization treatment gave optimum results to improve the quality of KLH with a specific gravity value of 0.41 g/cm3, WA value 141%, SC value 29.83%, screw grip strength value 25.24 kgf, value the internal bond strength is 7.27 kg/cm2, the % damage value is 25%, and the delamination ratio is 66.6% text |
