KAJIAN AKTIVITAS ANTIPHOTOAGING SENYAWA KATEKIN DARI EKSTRAK TUMBUHAN GAMBIR (UNCARIA GAMBIR ROXB.)
Indonesia is a tropical country that is often exposed to the sun. Exposure to sunlight or UV radiation can cause one of the manifestations of the skin, namely photoaging which is characterized by wrinkles, dry skin, fading of color, skin cancer, and so on. Uncaria gambier is a plant from the Rubiaceous tribe which grows quite a lot in Indonesia, especially in Sumatra and contains catechins. This literature study is intended to study the potential of catechin compounds from U. gambier plants as active compounds for photoaging. Literature studies are carried out by searching for journals or articles through search engines such as Google Scholar, Science Direct, PubMed, and Scopus using certain keywords. The results of this search obtained 64 journals or articles that were used to conduct a literature review. Research has shown that photoaging caused by UVA and UVB attacks the skin surface of the epidermis and dermis and then induces reactive oxygen species (ROS). It is ultimately on the matrix metalloproteinase (MMP) that causes collagen breakdown. Catechins are flavonoid compounds that function as antioxidants. These antioxidants can inhibit the formation of more ROS in the skin so that it can prevent further skin aging. This compound has 2 ways to overcome skin aging, namely directly seeking and attacking free radicals or by regulating protein synthesis and signaling pathways, inducing antioxidant enzymes in the body, and inhibiting pro-oxidant enzymes such as NADPH-oxidase. The catechins in U. gambier are expected to be potential and alternative as antiphotoaging in overcoming photoaging on human skin. text |
