Description
Summary:Universally climate has an important role for the tourism industry. Tourism activities can be disrupted if the weather and climate are not good. Information about the comfort level of the climate in an area are very important in determining the destination and time of travel. One method that can be used to determine the level of climate comfort is the Holiday Climate Index (HCI). This index was developed in urban and beach destinations. Research on the level of climate comfort using HCI in several parts of Indonesia has been carried out, but spatially it has not been calculated to distinguish between urban and beach areas. This study examines the level of climate comfort based on the HCI method for urban and beach destinations in East Kalimantan Province, which is a province with potential for future tourism development. In this study, data from the European Center for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) during the period January 1979-August 2019. The data used included maximum air temperature, relative humidity, wind speed, rainfall, and cloud cover. The results show that the level of climate comfort in East Kalimantan Province varies temporally, with the highest HCI urban value occurring in July while the HCI beach in August. HCI urban seasonal variations are more influenced by the contribution of rainfall while HCI beach seasonal variations are more influenced by cloud cover. In addition, the condition of the "unfavorable" category of traveling to HCI beach during the study period tends to increase and occurs most frequently during the DJF period. Spatially, the Paser, North Penajam Paser, and Mahakam Ulu regions tend to have a higher level of climate comfort than other regions
