PRELIMINARY STUDY OF TILTING TRAINS IN INDONESIA: A CASE STUDY ON THE JAKARTA – BANDUNG RAILWAY

The train is a mode of mass transportation that connects the movement of people from Jakarta to Bandung or vice versa with a travel time of three and a half hours. If the trains pass many curves on the railway, they need to reduce their speed to avoid excessive lateral acceleration. In the curves, t...

If the trains pass many curves on the railway, they need to reduce their speed to avoid excessive lateral acceleration. In the curves, the cant is given to overcome this, but its magnitude is limited by the regulations. The tilting train can be a solution to overcome the limitation of cant by tilting the carbody when it is passing a curve. Because it has never been implemented yet in Indonesia, a preliminary study of tilting train needs to be carried out. In this research, the tilting train is modeled using Universal Mechanism software. The tilting system is modeled by an actuator as a joint which its length is a function of time. The model is validated by comparing the value of the analytical parameter based on the theory with the value of the simulation results. Furthermore, the dynamic simulations using the validated model is carried out to test the tilting system in several curve geometry scenarios. Based on the simulation results, the tilting system works well in reducing the carbody lateral acceleration, but is not optimal because it is not equipped yet with a control system. The plan to increase the speed of the train on the Jakarta – Bandung railway to reduce travel time was prepared analytically and tested by the simulations for several curves. By ignoring irregularities on the railway, the tilting train is planned to operate with an average speed of 112 km/h so that the Jakarta – Bandung railway can be reached in less than two hours, assuming a maximum of total time to stop at all intermediate stations is 30 minutes. text
