In Indonesia, one of rock formation that’s identified from Oligocene epoch is Walat Formation in Mount Walat, Sukabumi, West Java. This formation is made up from sandstone that is deposited at river (fluvial), and the appearance of pollen fossil of Florschuetzia trilobata indicated that Walat Formation is from Oligocene epoch. At this formation, there is many plants fossil that has been discovered. This research is focusing on describing plants fossil that has been discovered and listing the species diversity at Oligocene epoch. Fossil that is in the rock is excavated, labeled, and preserved so the fossil can be described and identified in laboratories. The result shows that from 104 fossil samples that has been excavated, it can be grouped into 12 group based on the Family. That group are the Family of Lauraceae (1 group), Melastomataceae (2 group), Elaeocarpaceae (1 group), Myrtaceae (1 group), Moraceae (3 group), Poaceae (1 group), Fabaceae (2 group), and Marattiaceae (1 group). Fossil that has been found the most is from Family Poaceae, identified from the shape of the leaf that is linear with parallel vein. From the species diversity that has been found, the environment at that time is suspected to be a river area with composition of forest and shrubs. text |
