One effort to reduce the negative impact of overexposure to UV rays is the use of topical antioxidants with conventional delivery systems. However, the use of conventional delivery systems has several drawbacks such as poor ability to pass through the stratum corneum and inability to protect antioxidants from degradation. This literature review discussed the use and advantages of nanocarriers as a topical antioxidant delivery system. The data used in this literature review were obtained through search engines such as Google Scholar, PubMed, and ScienceDirect in the form of international articles or journals, research journals or review articles in English, experiments using antioxidant as active ingredient and nanocarrier as carrier systems, experiments with in vitro, in vivo, or ex vivo studies, and articles or journals that have a DOI (Digital Object Identifier). Reactive oxygen species (ROS) are free radicals produced internally or by external factors that skin damage due to oxidative stress. The use of topical antioxidants is used to overcome these problems. Different types of nanocarriers such as nanoemulsion, liposome, niosome, solid lipid nanoparticle (SLN), nanostructured lipid carrier (NLC) and polymeric nanoparticle are used to overcome various problems of topical antioxidant delivery systems such as skin barriers that limit antioxidant permeation and antioxidant instability to light. Various studies have shown that the use of nanocarriers provides advantages such as increasing penetration and permeation into the skin, providing a controlled release profile, increasing antioxidant stability, providing delivery to local targets, and increasing the effectiveness of antioxidants in the skin. Based on research data, the antioxidants encapsulated into nanocarrier lipids do not lose their activity and are able to provide better antioxidant effects. Based on the results of the literature review, the use of nanocarriers provides many advantages compared to conventional delivery systems so that they can be used with great potential in topical formulations for antioxidant delivery. text
