Description
Summary:Superoxide dismutase (SOD) is an antioxidant enzyme that plays a role in catalyzing the dismutase reaction of superoxide radicals in all aerobic organisms. The concentration imbalance of radicals with SOD or known as oxidative stress condition will cause several health problems. Cucurbitaceae plants such as Cucumis melo L. are known to be used as an alternative source of exogenous SOD due to its high concentrations of SOD. However, the process of obtaining SOD from plants is hampered by low isolation and purification yields. Through this literature review, isolation and purification method of SOD of Cucurbitaceae plants was analyzed based on the characteristics of the enzyme so larger amounts of SOD can be obtained. The literature review involved 26 journals obtained through searches using Google Scholar and PubMed. Based on the literature review process, it is known that Cucumis sativus as part of the Cucurbitaceae family has the highest SOD content. Homogenization method with PMSF and PVP added to buffer solution; as well as a series of purification processes such as ammonium sulphate precipitation, ion exchange chromatography, gel filtration, and FPLC can provide high yield of enzyme. The use of SOD is focused on the enzyme ability in overcoming various health problems.
