Various side effects caused by the use of antidepressants and the high public enthusiasm for traditional medicine are the reasons for the need to search the alternative therapies to treat depression. This study aims to determine the antidepressant effect of bitter melon juice (Momordica charantia L.) through the tail suspension test (TST) method and the measurement of neurotransmitter and cortisol levels, and to inventory kinds of literature related to the antidepressant potential of plants. The antidepressant effect of bitter melon juice was tested for 15 days in ddY strain mice, which were divided into four groups: a reference group, a vehicle group, and two test groups. The TST procedure was carried out on days 7 and 15. Measurement of neurotransmitter and cortisol levels in the brain of mice was carried out using the ELISA technique. The articles reviewed in the literature review are sourced from the search engines PubMed and Google Scholar. The results showed that bitter melon concentrate at doses of 100 and 200 mg/kg BW decreased the immobility time on the TST test (p<0.05). There was no significant change in neurotransmitter and cortisol levels compared to the control group. Twenty nine plants are reported to have antidepressant effects. Based on the research that has been done, we concluded that bitter melon has antidepressant effect. In the literature review of the clinical studies, we found lemon balm (Melissa officinalis L.), saffron (Crocus sativus L.), licorice (Glycyrrhiza glabra L.), lavender (Lavandula angustifolia Mill.), and rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) as the potential plants with antidepressant activity. text
