IDENTIFICATION OF ENVIRONMENTAL SENSITIVITY AT POTENTIAL LOCATIONS FOR PALM OIL WASTE-BASED BIOENERGY DEVELOPMENT IN WEST KALIMANTAN

Bioenergy is one of the renewable energy that has many potential to be developed massively in Indonesia, especially in West Kalimantan as a palm oil-based bioenergy producer. In order to reach the goal of increasing 23% mixed energy between renewable and non-renewable in 2025, several infrastructure...

In order to reach the goal of increasing 23% mixed energy between renewable and non-renewable in 2025, several infrastructures have already been built to complement the needs. An optimal location needs to be determined for the development of bioenergy infrastructures that is not only beneficial for the economy but also for the sustainability of the environment. Therefore, determining location for the development of palm oil-based bioenergy could also connect with impacts to the environment and also land-use planning, which is the purpose of this research, to know the impact on the environment from the development of bioenergy facilities. The approach that could be used is the environmental sensitivity concept, through formulating the sensitivity criteria that will be implemented for evaluating the distribution of environmental sensitivity in potential locations for the development of bioenergy in West Kalimantan. This research is conducted with the literature study to formulate the criteria followed by grading it using pairwise comparison method. Moreover, spatial datasets are also collected for the analysis using weighted overlay method for choosing the potential location of the bioenergy facilities that already complimented with the score of environmental sensitivity. This study concludes that the potential location of bioenergy facilities in West Kalimantan mainly has a low environmental sensitivity. Therefore, the impacts of the bioenergy facility development to the environment do not give a massive and significant negative impact on environmental sustainability in terms of biodiversity, natural resources and social environment. text
